So… How Do You Picture the Year Ahead?
What Could 2014 Look Like?
According to Michael Hyatt’s new program that I am doing (5-Days to Your Best Year Ever), 25 percent of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions after one week—60 percent do so within six months. The average person makes the same New Year’s resolution ten separate times without success.
Wow! So let’s by-pass writing out those resolutions and goals that we will not implement, and try to simplify this moment in the calendar when it is a good time to hit the re-set button and clean the slate.
I like simple. It is often easier to remember.
Here are FOUR, simple, yet highly strategic questions to help you both assess and plan the year ahead. These questions are GOLD. They will help you to bring closure to 2013… and help indicate where you could be headed in 2014.
CORE PREMISE: The way you chart the way forward… is first to take a look back.
Question #1: What’s RIGHT? What going on in my life that is right… and in-tune and aligned with how God has shaped you and your contribution?
IF IT’S RIGHT… PLAN TO DO IT MORE… AND BETTER… WITH GREATER INTENSITY… IN THE YEAR AHEAD.
Question #2: What’s WRONG? What’s going on that is a behavior, habit or rut that you have fallen into that you know is working against who you are, and how God has shaped you to live and lead?
IF IT’S WRONG… PLAN TO STOP AND CEASE THE BEHAVIOR. NOT ALWAYS EASY, BUT TAKE THEM ONE-BY-ONE AND CHANGE THE BEHAVIOR THAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK IN THE YEAR AHEAD.
Question #3: What’s MISSING? What needs to be incorporated into your life, your daily rhythm or behavior that has not been present like you know it should?
IF IT’S MISSING… BEGIN BY ADDING IT TO YOUR DAILY PATTERN… NOT ALL AT ONCE… INCREMENTAL CHANGE… SLOWLY ADD TO YOUR LIFE WHAT YOU KNOW YOU NEED THAT WAS MISSING LAST YEAR.
Question #4: What’s CONFUSED?
IF IT’S CONFUSED… PLAN NOW TO GET THE HELP OF SOMEONE YOU TRUST (COACH, MENTOR, FRIEND) TO HELP YOU GAIN GREATER CLARITY IN THOSE THINGS WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN UNCLEAR IN THE PAST YEAR.
How Do You Picture the Year Ahead?
Based on your responses… and your assessment of 2013… write a word-picture paragraph of where you sense God is leading you in the next year. If God could have His way… using the answers to your FOUR QUESTIONS… develop a picture that can help guide you into 2014.
Here is My EXAMPLE – How I PICTURE 2014:
It is clear that I am now in the FINISHING TRANSITION and that God’s desire is for me to focus this next year on living very intentionally… to be about consolidating the leader development insights I have been able to glean, and to set up new ways to replicate those insights to others.
Last year, I was not as focused as I should have been, and did not trust God to provide for our needs and say “no” to some of the opportunities that came my way. I see the year ahead as a year of completing; finishing the books, the resources and the leader processes I have developed, and then training individuals and regional hubs to begin to replicate these resources far beyond my contacts and abilities.
So…How Do You Picture Your 2014?
Love to hear insights you gained related to the year ahead!
